The primary purpose of the Unit is providing an educational, practical and instructional program for softball officials to qualify them for officiating assignments under the support of the CIF interscholastic softball program. The general goal of the Unit is to provide a professional service to the CIF-SS softball program. To this end, the Unit strives to promote good fellowship among its members and to provide qualified officials who know the rules, signals, procedure and mechanics to officiate Softball. The main priority of the Unit then is to have officials in Good Standing, who have met the requirements as outlined by the California Softball Officials Association (CSOA) Executive Council and the Long Beach Unit Board of Directors on an annual basis. A Member in Good Standing is one who meets the financial obligations imposed by this Unit, is in process of completing all classes, tests and clinics as required, and has maintained high professional and ethical standards.
To be Qualified/Certified in the Long Beach Unit, every official must comply with the following:
- Be a current paid member in good standing. This is to include ALL CSOA-SS Units.
- Must attend 18 HOURS of classroom/field instruction. Members must attend at least three meetings or 7.5 hours of instruction with the Long Beach Unit.
- Attend a field clinic.
- Complete the Study Guide and pass the Qualification Test. Qualification Test must be taken with your primary unit.
- Provide proof of umpire liability insurance.
Keep availability current on the Arbiter
NOTE: An official who attends another CSOA Unit to make up a required meeting must have a signed verification letter from that Unit’s Instructional Chairman, Secretary or President. This form can be obtained from this Unit’s Secretary/Treasurer. The form must include the make-up date. To be valid, the form can be submitted to this Unit’s Secretary/Treasurer, or given to him at the next Long Beach Unit meeting within 10 days of attending that other unit’s meeting. An email from the other unit to our unit’s Secretary/Treasurer will also be accepted.
A MEMBER MUST MEET THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS BEFORE HE/SHE IS PERMITTED TO BE ASSIGNED TO OFFICIATE A CIF SANCTIONED CONTEST FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON.
Preseason game assignments received and accepted by officials prior to the start of the current season will have these assignments rescinded if they do not meet the above criteria. Non-qualified officials, members without proof of liability insurance and members not in good standing will not receive assignments.
